Windows 11 S Mode: Switch to Home or Pro?

Windows 11 S Mode visual decision guide
Switching out of S Mode and upgrading to Windows 11 Pro are different actions: the first is free, while the second requires a qualifying Pro entitlement.
Short answer
You do not need another product key to switch Windows 11 Home out of S Mode. Microsoft provides a free, one-way switch through Activation settings and Microsoft Store. A qualifying Pro key or Store purchase is required only if you separately upgrade from Home to Pro. Check app compatibility, backups, account access, and the edition before changing either setting.
Reviewed August 30, 2026. Microsoft can change menu labels and Store screens. The current Microsoft S Mode support page should be treated as the primary procedural reference. Switching out is described as permanent for that Windows installation and device workflow.

What Windows 11 S Mode actually changes

S Mode is a restricted operating mode intended to emphasize security, predictable performance, and Microsoft-verified application delivery. On a Windows 11 Home device in S Mode, applications are generally installed through Microsoft Store rather than by running traditional installers downloaded from the web. This reduces the opportunity for an unknown executable to modify the computer, but it also prevents many specialist, business, peripheral, development, and legacy desktop applications from installing.

S Mode is not a separate higher or lower license that must be replaced. It is a configuration of Windows 11 Home on supported devices. The computer already has a Windows edition and activation entitlement. Switching out changes which applications can be installed; it does not automatically change Home into Pro, increase the device count, or alter Retail-versus-OEM transfer rights.

That distinction prevents unnecessary purchases. A user who needs Chrome, a printer utility, accounting desktop software, a VPN client, a game launcher, or another non-Store program may need to leave S Mode, but does not need to buy Windows again merely for that purpose. A user who needs BitLocker management, Remote Desktop hosting, Hyper-V, domain join, Group Policy, or another Pro capability is making a separate edition decision.

Microsoft states that switching out of S Mode is free and one-way. Before leaving, confirm that the blocked application is legitimate, supports the computer’s processor architecture, and is available from its official publisher. Leaving a protection model to install an unsafe or incompatible program solves the wrong problem.

Windows 11 S Mode: S Mode, Home, and Pro decision table

Choose the smallest change that meets the real requirement
Requirement Recommended direction Product key or purchase? Main caution
All required apps are in Microsoft Store and the device is simple to manage Stay in S Mode No Confirm future printer, school, work, and security-software needs
A trusted traditional desktop application is required Switch out of S Mode and remain on Home No; the switch is free The switch is one-way and reduces the Store-only restriction
A Pro-only business or management feature is required Switch out of S Mode, then upgrade Home to Pro through a supported path Yes, for the separate Pro upgrade Verify the feature, device ownership, and license channel before paying
An employer or school manages the device Ask the administrator Do not add a personal purchase without approval Policy, enrollment, recovery, and app management can be affected
The blocked app does not support the PC’s processor or Windows 11 Do not switch solely for that app No purchase fixes incompatibility Find a supported alternative or use a compatible device

Windows 11 S Mode: When do you actually need another product key?

No product key is required to leave S Mode. The device keeps its existing Windows 11 Home activation. The supported Store action changes the operating restriction, not the licensed edition. A website or support agent that says a new Windows key is mandatory merely to install a non-Store app is combining two separate tasks.

A qualifying Pro entitlement is required when the user wants to upgrade from Windows 11 Home to Windows 11 Pro. That can be purchased through Microsoft Store or activated with an eligible Pro product key through Activation settings. Before paying, identify the Pro-only feature that the user actually needs. The site’s Windows 11 Home vs Pro comparison helps structure that decision.

A new license may also be required when the PC’s existing Windows entitlement is invalid or the user is installing Windows on a different unlicensed device. That is not an S Mode issue. Check Settings → System → Activation. If Home already reports activation, do not buy another Home key to leave S Mode.

Product-key form does not establish transfer rights. If a Pro upgrade is purchased from a third party, verify whether it is Retail, OEM/device-bound, an upgrade entitlement, or another channel. Read digital license vs product key and Retail vs OEM rights before assuming the license can move to a future PC.

Windows 11 S Mode: Checklist before switching out of S Mode

  1. Confirm the current state. Open Activation settings and record Windows 11 Home, S Mode status, and activation.
  2. Identify the blocked application. Record its exact publisher, version, download source, system requirements, processor support, and price.
  3. Search Microsoft Store. The publisher may offer a Store version, web app, or supported alternative that lets the device remain in S Mode.
  4. Verify trust. Download only from the software publisher or a source it officially identifies. Do not leave S Mode to run a cracked, modified, or unknown installer.
  5. Check processor architecture. Some S Mode devices use ARM processors. Leaving S Mode does not make every x86 driver or application compatible.
  6. Check peripheral support. Confirm printers, scanners, audio devices, security tokens, and specialist drivers support the exact PC and Windows build.
  7. Create a verified backup. Copy important files to separate storage and open sample files from the backup.
  8. Save account and recovery data. Confirm Microsoft account access, multi-factor authentication, device-encryption recovery keys, and the administrator account.
  9. Install updates. Complete Windows and manufacturer updates, restart, and check Activation again.
  10. Confirm ownership. If the PC belongs to work, school, or another family member, obtain approval before changing a one-way security setting.

A child, older adult, kiosk, shared household computer, or simple school device may benefit from S Mode’s restricted installation model. The inability to run arbitrary installers can prevent accidental toolbars, fake support utilities, or bundled adware. Leaving should solve a named, verified compatibility need rather than a vague belief that the PC will become faster.

Windows 11 S Mode: How to switch out through Microsoft’s supported path

Microsoft’s current instructions direct the user to Settings → System → Activation. In the section for switching out of S Mode, select the Store link. Microsoft specifically distinguishes the S Mode switch from the separate “Upgrade your edition of Windows” area. On the Microsoft Store page titled for switching out of S Mode, select Get. After confirmation, applications from outside Microsoft Store can be installed.

  1. Sign in with the Microsoft account appropriate for the device and confirm internet access.
  2. Open Settings → System → Activation.
  3. Find the S Mode section rather than the edition-upgrade purchase section.
  4. Select the link that opens Microsoft Store.
  5. On the official switch page, select Get and wait for confirmation.
  6. Restart if Windows requests it.
  7. Return to Activation settings and confirm the current edition and activation state.
  8. Install the required application only from its verified publisher, then update and scan it.

Use Microsoft’s official S Mode instructions while performing the change. Do not search for a downloadable “S Mode unlocker,” registry patch, command script, or generic key. The supported switch is free and does not require third-party software.

If the real goal is Windows 11 Pro

Switch out of S Mode first, verify that Home remains activated, and then handle the edition upgrade as a second controlled change. Install updates, preserve the backup, and use Settings → System → Activation to open Microsoft Store or enter a qualifying Pro key. The detailed Home-to-Pro upgrade guide covers preparation, activation, and post-upgrade checks.

Do not buy Pro merely to install Chrome, Zoom, a printer driver, or another ordinary desktop app. Leaving S Mode while staying on Home is enough when Home contains all required operating-system features. Pro should be tied to a documented requirement such as business management, virtualization, Remote Desktop hosting, domain enrollment, or security administration.

If the PC is inexpensive, confirm its hardware can use the Pro feature effectively. A low-memory device with limited storage may technically upgrade but perform poorly with virtual machines or demanding business software. The Windows edition cannot add RAM, storage, processor support, or driver compatibility.

What if Microsoft Store will not complete the switch?

  • Confirm that the device is connected to the internet and that ordinary Microsoft Store pages open.
  • Install Windows updates and restart.
  • Check automatic date, time, time zone, and region settings.
  • Confirm that a permitted Microsoft account is signed in and not blocked by family, school, or organization policy.
  • Check whether a proxy, VPN, firewall, or filtered network interferes with Store access; ask the administrator before disabling controls.
  • Open Activation settings again and use the S Mode section, not the Pro purchase section.
  • Use official Microsoft support if the Store page reports ownership, server, or account errors.

Do not reset or reinstall Windows as the first remedy. A reset can remove applications and settings and still return the device to its manufacturer configuration. If recovery is considered, create a verified backup, save encryption keys, and review the manufacturer’s recovery behavior. The dedicated clean-install guide for new PCs addresses a different scenario and should not be used as a shortcut for a Store-account problem.

Microsoft describes leaving S Mode as one-way. A factory recovery image can sometimes restore a manufacturer’s original configuration, but that should not be treated as a supported toggle or guaranteed return path. Decide as if the change is permanent.

Who should stay in S Mode—and who should switch?

Consider staying when

  • Every required app is in Microsoft Store or works in a browser.
  • The PC is shared with users who benefit from restricted installs.
  • Simple security and predictable maintenance matter most.
  • No specialist driver, business app, or developer tool is required.

Consider switching when

  • A trusted, supported non-Store application is essential.
  • Work or school requirements have been verified.
  • Backups, recovery keys, and administrator access are controlled.
  • The user understands the one-way security tradeoff.

Pause when the device is managed, the application source is unclear, the PC architecture is unsupported, or the only reason is a pop-up telling the user to “unlock Windows.” Review the site’s Windows 11 Home checklist and seller verification guide before any separate license purchase.

NO KEY REQUIRED TO LEAVE S MODE

Do not purchase Windows again for the free switch

A product comparison becomes relevant only if you separately need Pro or if the current Home activation is invalid. If Pro is required, review the available Windows listings only after verifying the feature, edition, license channel, device limit, transfer terms, and refund remedy.

Questions buyers ask

Will switching out of S Mode delete my files?

The supported switch changes the application-installation restriction and is not described as a Windows reinstall. Create a verified backup anyway because account, Store, storage, or pre-existing system problems can occur independently of the switch.

Can I switch back into S Mode later?

Microsoft describes switching out as one-way. Do not rely on a factory reset or recovery image as a convenient toggle. Decide after checking future application and security needs.

Do I need Windows 11 Pro to install apps from the web?

No. Windows 11 Home outside S Mode can install supported traditional desktop applications. Pro is needed only for Pro-specific Windows features, not ordinary application installation.

Why does the Store show a Pro upgrade price?

The Pro upgrade is a separate transaction. Return to Activation settings and use the section specifically for switching out of S Mode. Follow Microsoft’s current page rather than purchasing Pro accidentally.

Can a product key turn off S Mode?

A key is not required for the free switch. A qualifying Pro key can upgrade the edition after the supported S Mode exit, but the two actions should be handled separately.

Will leaving S Mode make an incompatible app work?

It removes the Store-only installation restriction; it does not change processor architecture, memory, drivers, Windows-version support, or application licensing. Verify all system requirements first.
